HISTORY OF THESSALONIKI, GREECE
Thessaloniki is a city with a rich history, full of life and energy. Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece after the capital of Athens with a population of about 1 million. It was founded by the Macedonian king and successor to Alexander Cassander. He named it after his wife Thessalonica, sister of Alexander the Great. Her father named her after his victory over the Thessalians. The name can be translated as “victory over the Thessalians. The large streets, parks and squares have beautiful green spaces and rows of trees. There are old houses and neoclassical buildings next to modern buildings. The people of Thessaloniki are known throughout Greece for their kindness and hospitality. The city is also popular for its great cuisine and no one can resist the delicious cakes and pies. Be sure to visit one of the many taverns that offer traditional Greek food and live music.
One of the most famous landmarks of Thessaloniki is the White Tower. It was used by the Ottoman Turks as a fortress and a prison where many Bulgarian revolutionaries and opponents of Ottoman rule lay. In 1826, by order of Sultan Mahmud II, the prisoners were killed in the tower. Due to the countless victims of Ottoman torture and executions, the tower was called the Tower of the Janissaries, Kamlakule – the Bloody Tower and the Red Tower until the end of the 19th century. The Turks imprisoned and tortured Captain Petko Voyvod in the tower in 1863.
In 1890, the tower was whitewashed and thus got its current name. Although it is light beige today, it is still called the White Tower. The tower is now located on the coastal boulevard “Niki”. It houses the Byzantine Museum and is one of the city’s main tourist attractions. The building is run by the Greek Ministry of Culture and the Byzantine Antiquities Agency.
The ground floor and six more floors are connected by a 120-meter spiral staircase along the outer wall. The tower is considered a symbol of Thessaloniki and a symbol of Greek rule over Macedonia.
Others, more famous – the church of St. Dimitar, city wall, Galerius arch, rotunda of St. Georgi and others. The city is well developed, with large squares (St. Sophia Cathedral, Aristotle) and wide boulevards (Alexander the Great). Byzantine churches, Roman buildings, modern architecture, vibrant nightlife and spectacular beaches make up Thessaloniki.
The city was the capital of one of the four Roman provinces in Macedonia after the Roman conquest. During his second visit to Macedonia, the Apostle Paul preached in the local synagogue, which was the main one for Jews in the area, and founded a Christian brotherhood and church. Due to the displeasure of local Jewish leaders, he left the city and headed west to the city of Veria.
Thessaloniki is home to the largest university in the Balkans, named after Aristotle, a major seaport, the second most important in the country after Piraeus. Thessaloniki is one of the important trade centers of Byzantium. The creators of the Glagolitic alphabet, Cyril and Methodius, were born in the city. In 1492, after the persecution of Sephardic Jews in Spain, some of them settled in Thessaloniki.
The city is becoming one of the largest Jewish centers not only in the Balkans. Thessaloniki was part of the Ottoman Empire until 1912, inhabited mainly by Jews. After the war, the Treaty of Bucharest was signed between the allies, according to which the city was transferred to Greece and renamed Thessaloniki. Tens of thousands of Bulgarians have been expelled from their homes forever.
The Bulgarian Secondary School for Boys in Thessaloniki is closed, as are the Secondary School for Girls, the Bulgarian Church of St. Cyril and St. Methodius, the Bulgarian Church Municipality, the Board of Trustees of the Exarchate and many other Bulgarian cultural institutions. Repressions of Greek soldiers against Bulgarians, Jews and Turks were recorded, which led to armed clashes with Bulgarian units.
